Am 2. September 2023 jährt sich der Todestag von J. R. R. Tolkien zum 50. Mal. Der britische Autor prägte mit «Der Herr der Ringe» und «Der Hobbit» das Fantasy-Genre grundlegend. Die Sondermarken wurden vom bekannten in der Schweiz lebenden Künstler John Howe gestaltet und ehren Tolkiens Kunsterbe mit vier Szenen aus den legendären Werken.
Sanfte Hügel, sattes Grün und mittendrin kleine Häuschen: Das Auenland, eine Region in Tolkiens Fantasiewelt Mittelerde, ist das Zuhause der Hobbits. Das gleichnamige Sujet lässt vom Haus von Bilbo Beutlin – einem der Hauptprotagonisten – in die idyllische Umgebung hinausblicken. Auch scheint Gandalf gerade im Auenland zu Besuch zu sein, ein weiser Zauberer, der gegen das Böse kämpft. Zu den dunklen Mächten gehört etwa der Drache Smaug, dem ebenfalls eine Marke gewidmet ist. Das vierte Sujet zeigt «die Argonath», die Säulen der Könige bilden die nördliche Grenze zum Königreich Gondor.
Aus Tolkiens Briefen geht hervor, dass eine Inspirationsquelle seiner Geschichten in der Schweiz liegt: Mit 19 Jahren wanderte er durch das Berner Oberland und das Wallis – ein Abenteuer, das auch seine Werke mitprägte. Die Szenen auf den Briefmarken-Motiven stammen aus der Hand von John Howe, der zu den wichtigsten Illustratoren von Tolkiens Arbeiten gehört.

Le 2 septembre 2023 est la date du 50e anniversaire de la mort de J. R. R. Tolkien. Avec «Le Seigneur des anneaux» et «Le Hobbit», l’auteur britannique a fondé le genre de la fantasy. Conçus par le célèbre artiste John Howe, domicilié en Suisse, les timbres spéciaux rendent hommage au legs artistique de Tolkien avec quatre scènes issues de ses ouvrages légendaires.
Avec ses douces collines, ses vertes prairies et ses curieuses maisonnettes, la Comté est une région de la Terre du Milieu, pays de fiction imaginé par Tolkien et patrie des hobbits. Le timbre au sujet du même nom représente ce paysage idyllique, vu depuis le logis de Bilbon Sacquet, l’un des principaux protagonistes. Magicien empli de sagesse luttant contre le mal, Gandalf semble lui aussi être en visite dans la Comté. Le dragon Smaug, l’un des représentants des forces obscures, a également eu droit à un timbre, tout comme «Les Argonath», les colonnes des rois qui marquent la frontière nord du royaume de Gondor.
Les lettres de Tolkien révèlent que la Suisse a été une source d’inspiration pour ses récits: l’aventure vécue lors de ses randonnées dans l’Oberland bernois et le Valais à l’âge de 19 ans a aussi nourri son œuvre. Les scènes.

Tolkien, l’autore britannico che ha dato un contributo fondamentale alla nascita del genere fantasy con opere come «Il Signore degli Anelli» e «Lo Hobbit». I francobolli speciali sono stati realizzati dal noto artista John Howe, residente in Svizzera, e onorano l’eredità artistica di Tolkien con quattro scene tratte dalle sue opere leggendarie.
Dolci colline di un verde intenso, costellate di piccole case: è il paesaggio della Contea, una regione del mondo fantastico della Terra di Mezzo ideato da Tolkien, nonché terra natia degli hobbit. L’omonimo motivo lascia intravedere questo paesaggio idilliaco dalla porta della casa di Bilbo Baggins, uno dei protagonisti della storia. Ma nella Contea sembra essere arrivato in visita anche Gandalf, un saggio stregone impegnato nella lotta contro il male. Tra le forze oscure c’è ad esempio il drago Smaug, anche lui protagonista di uno dei francobolli. Il quarto motivo è dedicato agli Argonath, le Colonne dei Re poste al confine settentrionale con il regno di Gondor.
Dalle lettere di Tolkien sappiamo che una delle fonti d’ispirazione per i suoi racconti fu la Svizzera: all’età di 19 anni lo scrittore fece un viaggio a piedi attraverso l’Oberland bernese e il Vallese che avrebbe lasciato il segno anche nel suo lavoro. A rappresentare le scene sui francobolli è stato John Howe, uno dei più importanti illustratori delle opere di Tolkien.

2 September 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of J. R. R. Tolkien, the British author who had a pivotal influence on the fantasy genre thanks to his novels “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”. These special stamps were designed by well-known artist John Howe, who lives in Switzerland, and pay tribute to Tolkien’s artistic heritage with four scenes from the iconic works.
Gentle hills and lush green dotted with little houses: the Shire, a region in Tolkien's fantasy world Middle-earth, is home to the hobbits. The design of the same name offers a glimpse of its idyllic surroundings from inside the house of Bilbo Baggins, one of the main protagonists. It seems that Gandalf, a wise wizard who fights against evil, is also on a visit to The Shire. Another stamp is dedicated to the dragon Smaug, one of the dark forces of these tales. The fourth design depicts the Argonath, the Pillars of the Kings marking the northern border to the Kingdom of Gondor.
Tolkien’s letters reveal Switzerland to be one source of inspiration for his stories: at the age of 19, he hiked through the Bernese Oberland and Valais – an adventure that helped to influence his works. The scenes depicted on the stamps are from the hand of John Howe, one of the most important illustrators of Tolkien’s works.
